Os estudos que na atualidade a filologia dedica ao romanceiro da tradição oral moderna muito poco devem à concessão que regia, até bem entrado o século XX, os trabalhos que pioneiramente iam desbravando terreno nesta área. Refiro-me me particular àqueles que, ao mesmo tempo que se lançavam em campanhas de recolha pelas comunidades que guardavam essa memória poética, organizavam os materiais que compilavam e teorizavam sobre os mecanismos de funcionamento da tradição oral, entre os quais o nome de Ramón Menéndez Pidal surge naturalmente à cabeceira.
