Abstract

Post-event processing, which involves a post-mortem analysis of the social situation, has been pointed out as a maintenance factor of social anxiety disorder, which in turn, has also been associated with higher levels of shame, self-criticism and (lack of) self-compassion. Considering the negative impact of social anxiety disorder, especially when originating in adolescence, it becomes important to explore new relations between the constructs associated with it, in order to increase the effectiveness of available interventions. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the mediating role of shame, self-criticism and self-compassion in the relationship between post-event processing and social anxiety in an adolescent sample from the general population. The sample consisted of 407 subjects, with an average age of 15.47 (S.D. = 1.44). The results revealed shame (internal and external), self-criticism and the (lack of) self-compassion as significant partial mediators in the relationship between post-event processing and social anxiety. These results suggest that the impact of post-event processing in social anxiety can be not only direct but also indirect, through the effect of shame, self-criticism and (lack of) self-compassion. Subsequently, the development of self-compassion abilities should be addressed in an effective clinical intervention.
