Abstract

Until now, several studies analysed the relationship between test anxiety and perfectionism but they mostly highlight the trace dimension of this construct. The perfectionistic self-presentation, which reflects perfectionism interpersonal expression, has been related with depressive and anxious sintomatology. However, no study has approached the relationship between this construct and and test anxiety. Self-criticism has been positively associated with test anxiety and self-compassion has been negatively associated with general anxiety. This study main objetive was to explore the mediator role of self-criticism and self-compassion in the relationship between perfectionism and test anxiety (and perceived interference). The sample was composed by 387 students – 218 girls (56.3%) and 169 boys (43.7%), aged between 13 and 18 years old (M = 15.84; DP = 1.32), from middle and high school (9th to 12th grade). Test anxiety and perceived interference correlated positively and significantly with perfectionism and self-criticism and correlated negatively and significantly with self-compassion. Regression analysis revealed that gender, nondisplay of imperfection, inadequate self and hated self, non-critical attitude and non-isolation attitude were significant predictors of test anxiety. The same happened to perceived interference, except for hated self and non-isolation attitude. Furthermore, self-criticism and self-compassion were partial mediators in the relationship between perfectionism and test anxiety/perceived interference. This is the first study to relate test anxiety, perfectionistic self-presentation, self-criticism and self-compassion in an adolescent sample. In general, our results indicate the importance of perfectionism public expression, self-criticism and self-compassion to understand and intervene in test anxiety in adolescents.
