Abstract

Although it has been suggested that perfectionism has a significant influence on test anxiety, some authors argue that self-criticism, and not perfectionism by itself, is the dysfunctional aspect, distinguishing between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. Furthermore, positive correlations have been found between self-criticism and test anxiety and negative correlations have been found between the test anxiety and self-reassurance. This study main purpose was to explore the mediator role of self-criticism and self-compassion in the relationship between perfectionism and test anxiety (and perceived interference). The sample was composed by 308 college students -178 females (57.8%) and 130 males (42.2%) – aged between 18 and 30 years old (M = 20.86; DP = 2.45). We found positive and significant correlations between test anxiety (and perceived interference), perfectionism and self-criticism. We also found negative and significant correlations between test anxiety (and perceived interference) and self-compassion. Regression analysis revealed maladaptive perfectionism, inadequate self, non-critical attitude and non-isolation attitude as test anxiety predictors. The same happened in perceived interference prediction, except for the non-isolation attitude. Partial mediations by self-criticism and self-compassion have been found in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and test anxiety/perceived interference. This study was the first research to relate test anxiety, perfectionism, self-criticism and self-compassion. In general, our results indicate the importance of perfectionism, self-criticism and self-compassion to understand and intervene in test anxiety
