Abstract

The present study aims to analyse the validity of the application of the Expressive Vocabulary and Matrices subtest from the Spanish version of the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) to a sample of Portuguese children, as well as the correlation of the average results obtained with the average results achieved by the same sample in two subtests of the WISC-III (Vocabulary and Picture Disposal). Both tests were applied to 102 Portuguese children (divided into a subsample of 51 children aged 9 and another of equal dimension of 10-year-olds) who attended the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade of Basic Education. Internal consistency coefficients range from ,638 to ,763 and those of correlation from ,165 to ,682. Thus verifying that the results show average results identical to those of Spanish children (in the same age group), and medium high standardized results in the WISC-III standardized version for the Portuguese population. Thus concluding that both K-BIT subtests constitute a valid screening tool that may in the future (after standardization for the Portuguese population) be presented as a valid alternative to WISC-III
