Abstract

Empathy's main function is to help individuals to establish and maintain lasting social relationships, thus it is important to analyze the factors that contribute to its development. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between empathy and the factors of parenting, particularly the perception of adolescents about parental educational styles. The sample was constituted by 236 adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years (M=13,68; SD=1,37) of both genders. For this study were used the Basic Empathy Scale (Jolliffe, 2005; Portuguese version: Nobre Lima, Rijo & Matias, 2011), the EMBU-A (Gerlsma, Arrindell, Van Der Veen & Emmelkamp, 1991; portuguese version: Lacerda, 2005) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The result indicated an influence of the perception of parental rejection more associated with the prevalence of cognitive empathic behaviors. It was also found that the level of cognitive empathy was higher than affective empathy and an extension of these results both by gender and by age.
