Abstract

To be self-compassionate implies being sensitive and open to one’s own suffering – and not to avoid it. It involves the desire to relieve that suffering and adopting a posture of kindness and impartial understanding towards oneself. It also requires that one’s own experience is seen as part of the common human experience and that suffering, failure and inadequacies are recognized as part of the human condition. Not forgetting that all people, including oneself, are worthy of compassion. On contrary, self-criticism is a form of self-to-self relationship where one part of self finds fault and/or imperfection, accuses or even condemns the self. Self-criticism can have different forms and functions and can target different aspects of the self. Self-criticism different dimensions can be associated with different forms of psychopathology. The present study main aim was to study the psychometric characteristics of the Self-Criticism and Self-Compassion Scale (Falconer, King, & Brewin, 2015), in the Portuguese population. This scale is based on specific scenarios that evaluate how the subject is self-compassionate or self-critical. We conducted a Principal Component Analysis with a direct oblimin rotation in a sample of 374 participants. Results are in line with the original study, showing a two-component structure: State Self-Compassion and State Self-Criticism, with good internal consistency and moderate temporal validity for both scales. Convergent and divergent validities showed acceptable values. Thus, the findings reveal that this scale is a useful tool for assessing situational/or state self-compassion and self-criticism simultaneously.
