Abstract

This dissertation examines the relation between the Portuguese versions of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children (WISC and WISC – III), which were administered in a counterbalanced design, regarding the presentation order, to a sample of 41 institutionalized delinquent adolescents, with ages between 13 and 16 years old. The FSIQ scores obtained in WISC – III are, in average, approximately, 19 points lower than the scores obtained in WISC. The results verified in VIQ and PIQ in WISC – III are situated, respectively, 10 and 22 points lower than the results of VIQ and PIQ in WISC. The implications of these results are discussed in the scope of the empirical relations between WISC and WISC – III, as in the context of the investigation of the relations between intelligence and anti-social behavior. In a second study we present a more thorough characterization and interpretative analysis of the results in the WISC-III. This second study results shows that offenders get scores below the standard for the general population in about two standard-deviations, in respect to VIQ, PIQ and FSIQ, results that are consistent with those obtained in published international research. The Vocabulary and Block Design subtests are the best measures of the individual intelligence in this group of institutionalized delinquents.
