Abstract

Post-Event Processing (also called post-mortem) has been seen as one of the most important maintaining factors in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).This study propose to assess and validate the Post-Event Processing Questionnaire (PEPQ; Fehm, Hoyer, Scheider, Lindemann, & Klushann, 2008) to the Portuguese population. The present sample was composed by 292 subjects (49.90% women and 52.10% men). The factor analysis revealed 3 factors (different from the original – Cognitive Impairment, Negative Self, Past and Future and Avoidance): Persistent Rumination (F1), Specific Rumination (F2) and Control Attempts (F3). All factors and the total of PEPQ showed good internal consistency. Test-retest reliability showed reasonable and good values. Convergent validity was established but more studies are needed to ascertain discriminant validity. Regarding sensibility, the questionnaire revealed a good discriminant ability between subjects from general population and subjects with SAD (both in total and factors). This measurehas shown to bo a useful and reliable tool both in research and clinical practice. Clinical implications and limitations were discussed.
