Abstract

Victims of maltreatment (e.g. different kinds of abuse, domestic violence, rejection, shaming experiences) have higher levels of shame and antisocial behavior. In recent years, detailed research has related the intensity of shame feelings to the development of psychopathology and a smaller number of controversial studies explored the association of shame and psychopathy. This study aims to explore the possible role of current shame feelings and shame coping styles as relevant mediators in the relationship between early experiences and psychopathic traits. Participants were 348 subjects from a non-clinical sample aged between 15 and 18 years old. The main results showed that the centrality of early experiences of shame and the absence of warmth and safeness experiences in childhood, both predict current shame feelings. Additionally, different shame coping strategies seems to be associated in differentiated manner with affective, interpersonal and behavioral dimensions of psychopathy. Overall, findings support the idea that psychopathic traits can result for the use of particular strategies that the individual adopts to reduce shame. These findings help to sustain a new approach to the understanding of the psychological and emotional factors underlying the development of psychopathy in adolescents. They also contribute to the development of new approaches to the prevention and psychotherapeutic intervention in youth with some degree of psychopathy.
