Birras infantis, estilos educativos parentais e comportamento de punição

Abstract

Owing the increasing interest in the area of children's tantrums, as well as the relevance of the topic and lack of studies about the theme, it is essential to have a deeper knowledge about children's tantrums and their implications. Thus, the present study aims to characterize tantrums, know the parenting practices applied when facing a tantrum behavior and understand the relationship between the tantrums and the legitimacy of physical punishment. For this purpose, we used a sample of 66 children between the age of five and ten, in which 33 had a previous diagnosis of Disruptive Behavior Disorder and the other 33 who had no problems identified, and in both cases the filling of the inventories was the parents’ responsibility. The analysis shows that a Disruptive Behavior Disorder tends to be associated with an increasing frequency and intensity of tantrums. Furthermore, evidence gathered shows statistically significant data that indicates that parents of children with a Disruptive Behavior Disorder adopt, before the tantrums, more punitive strategies and less nonpunitive strategies.
