ESTILOS EDUCATIVOS PARENTAIS E SUA RELAÇÃO COM O COMPORTAMENTO DAS CRIANÇAS

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the relationship between parental educational styles and child behavior in primary school children, simultaneously considering family and school contexts. Variables analyzed included predominant parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful), family functioning, children’s emotional, social, and behavioral adjustment, and the impact of sociodemographic factors such as age, education level, and family composition. The sample was one of convenience, consisting of 66 parents/guardians of children aged 6 to 12 years, enrolled in the Agrupamento de Escolas Eugénio de Castro in Coimbra. Validated instruments were used to assess the variables under study, namely the QEDP (Parental Educational Styles Questionnaire), SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), and SCORE-15, as well as a sociodemographic questionnaire. Data collection was conducted autonomously by the parents, ensuring anonymity and confidentiality.Data analysis allowed the identification of predominant trends in parenting styles and child behaviors, showing the predominance of the authoritative style, associated with positive family functioning and overall child adjustment. However, subgroups of children with hyperactivity, emotional symptoms, or relational difficulties were also identified, indicating the coexistence of protective factors and vulnerabilities. The findings underscore the importance of interventions promoting positive parenting and fostering collaboration between family and school, particularly in contexts of higher vulnerability. Keywords: Parenting styles; Child behavior; Socio-emotional adjustment; Positive parenting; School; Family.
