Relação entre Estilos Educativos Parentais, Inteligência Emocional e Estilos de Coping: uma Revisão Sistemática

Abstract

Emotional Intelligence, Coping Styles, and Parental Educational Styles have been the subject of growing interest in the field of developmental psychology and mental health. These three dimensions are interconnected and influence each other throughout the life cycle, affecting emotional well-being, behavior, and the ability to cope with adversity. This systematic review of the literature aims to explore in an integrated way how these three constructs relate to each other, with an emphasis on the influence of parenting styles on the development of emotional intelligence and, in turn, on the choice of coping styles. Following the PRISMA guidelines, the literature on Parental Educational Styles, Coping Styles, and Emotional Intelligence was reviewed in five online databases (ProQuest, PubMed e EBSCO, Scopus e Web of Science). The search was restricted to articles published in the last 10 years. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied in two phases, selecting the articles most relevant to the study objective. After applying the eligibility criteria, 14 of the 1,067 articles retrieved met the inclusion criteria. The results suggest that poor parenting practices are associated with an increase in maladaptive coping styles and low emotional intelligence. Poor parenting practices can significantly compromise children's social-emotional development. The absence of emotional support, overly strict discipline, or lack of structure impairs the acquisition of self-regulation and empathy skills, resulting in lower levels of emotional intelligence. Consequently, these family experiences tend to favor the use of maladaptive coping strategies, such as avoidance, rumination, or externalization of frustration, to the detriment of more functional responses such as problem solving or seeking social support. Thus, poor parenting practices act as risk factors, limiting resilience and psychological adjustment in stressful contexts. Keywords:Parenting Styles; Emotional Intelligence; Coping Styles
