A Intermedialidade n'Os Maias de Eça de Queirós

Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the existing relationships between the novel Os Maias – Episodes from a Romantic Life, published in 1888 by Eça de Queirós, and other image-based arts, in light of intermedial studies. This proposal stems from the perception that Eça shapes his fictional world, which implies almost a phenomenology of vision, creating an effect of presence that brings the reader closer to a sensorial and imagetic experience. The ideals of Realism, as is well known, were grounded in an aesthetics of observation, a premise that the writer always valued and defended, leading him to produce texts of remarkable pictorial richness. Queirosian writing seems to transcend verbal language and approach other arts, evoking or imitating visual media such as painting and theatre, in addition to anticipating certain stylistic procedures that would later be explored by cinema. To understand how Os Maias intersects with image-based media, we sought theoretical grounding in narrative studies, which, in their recent development, have been opening up to increasingly broad and effective analyses. This way, we turned to intermediality theory, an investigative field that has been gaining more prominence in academia, as it allows a more systematic and comprehensive analysis when considering the different ways in which literary text can approach other arts, diminishing boundaries and consolidating a less hierarchical dialogical relationship between media. This intertwining can be understood as a way to expand the meanings of the text, as if verbal language were seeking resources in other arts to intensify its expressive power. Through this interdisciplinary approach, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how the novel Os Maias, although belonging to the literary context of the nineteenth century, remains open to new readings and interpretations, establishing itself as a work that transcends the limits of its time. Revisiting the magnum opus of Eça de Queirós through new theoretical currents not only reaffirms its status as a central work in the literary canon, but also highlights the relevance of intermedial studies for contemporary literary criticism, as they open new interpretative possibilities.
