In recent years, internet dependency has become a growing concern due to its high prevalence and negative consequences among teenagers, with literature demonstrating that it can lead to psychosocial problems. To our knowledge, there are no studies that have explored the relationships between internet dependency, self-criticism and school difficulties. The aims of the study were to investigate the relationships between internet dependency at time 1, self-criticism at time 2 and school difficulties at time 2, as well as the mediating effect of self-criticism on the relationship between these variables. The sample consisted of 253 adolescents aged between 11 and 15 years old. The design of this study is longitudinal, with a follow-up of six months. The results demonstrated that internet dependency, self-criticism and school difficulties are positively correlated with each other. It was found that there were no differences between genders in internet dependency. However, girls presented higher levels of self-criticism and school difficulties. The simple mediation model demonstrated the existence of significant partial mediation of self-criticism in the relationship between internet dependency and school difficulties. This study provided some knowledge about the negative consequences of internet dependency over time, namely school difficulties. The results obtained suggest that self-criticism is an explanatory mechanism in the relationship between internet dependency and school difficulties. The present study emphasizes the importance of interventions focused on internet dependency and self-criticism, among adolescents, in order to reduce the school difficulties experienced.
