Ver ou ler: da caligrafia ao desenho

Abstract

Before alphabetic writing appeared, there was already communication through images, through man-made illustrations. Their parallelism with writing emerged over time and, at certain moments in history, the fusion of text and image gave rise to asemic writing, a form of writing without semantic content. In this context, it is essential to analyze Ana Hatherly’s essay, The Reinvention of Reading, and her work, as it analyzes the main concepts such as the field of legibility and illegibility and the tension between text and image. On the other hand, technological advances have opened up countless possibilities for work in various areas and have brought new possibilities for developing projects with more dynamic and experimental approaches. It is possible, through technology, to imitate calligraphic movement and lead to the exploration of visual artifacts that communicate between visuality and reading. This dissertation aims to explore these possibilities through the creation of visual compositions that take advantage of calligraphic movement and approach drawing. The visual artifacts obtained result from the exploration of various factors such as randomness, sound or the movement of the surrounding space and arise from the application of various deformations and superimpositions that take into account the heritage of Ana Hatherly’s work and textual and visual composition. Taking into account these new possibilities and the artist’s work as inspiration, we have what it takes to extend the artist’s legacy with the help of programming.
