Funcionamento Executivo na Neurofibromatose Tipo 1

Abstract

The present research aims to study executive functioning in patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The sample consists of 40 children and adolescents, divided into 2 groups: children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) (n = 20) and children with typical development (n = 20), aged between 10 and 16 years old. The two groups are similar in age, gender and socioeconomic level. An executive functioning assessment protocol was developed consisting of: several performance tests (the WISC-III Digit Span subtest, the Corsi Board, Tower, Rapid Naming of Shapes and Colors , Semantic Verbal Fluency, Phonemic Verbal Fluency, Trails A and B, Judgment of Line Orientation, Letter-Number Sequencing from WISC-V and Stroop test); and questionnaires: BRIEF2 (Parent and Self-Report Forms) and CHEXI. Performance tests identified cognitive flexibility as the area of greatest executive difficulty in NF1 group. Regarding the BRIEF2 Parent Form, statistical significant differences were found in the Planning, Inhibition and Task Monitoring scales between the NF1 Group and the group with typical development. When the Parent and Self-Report Forms of the BRIEF2 were correlated, no significant correlations were found. Strong correlations were also identified between the CHEXI scales and the BRIEF clinical scales completed by the parents of the NF1 children. Finally, the correlations between the BRIEF2 Parent Form and the performance tests in the NF1 group were mostly weak or moderate, and non significant.
