Abstract

The Internet is part of everyday life of society and, over the years, its association with psychological problems has been investigated in literature. To our knowledge, there are no studies that have explored the relationship between the problematic Internet use, depressive symptomatology, self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet. Therefore, this study sought to analyse the relationship between the problematic Internet use and depressive symptomatology in adolescents, as well as whether the levels of self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet mediated the relationship between the variables. The sample consisted of 303 adolescents aged between 11 and 15. The following self-report instruments were filled: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Children’s Depression Inventory, Internet Use Function Scale and the Self-Compassion Scale for Adolescents. The results show that the problematic Internet use, depressive symptomatology, self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet correlate positively with each other. The mediation models revealed a partial mediation of self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet in the relationship between the time spent online and depressive symptomatology, and a total mediation of self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet in the relationship the degree of Internet dependence and depressive symptomatology. The results of this study suggest that self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet are an explanatory mechanism in the relationship between the problematic use of the Internet and depressive symptomatology. Thus, the present study emphasises the importance of intervening in the problematic use of the Internet and in the levels of self-criticism and experiential avoidance through the Internet, in order to reduce depressive symptomatology.
