Infidelidade no Namoro: Estudo Qualitativo Sobre Crenças e Atitudes na Adultez Emergente

Abstract

One of the main criteria of mental health and interpersonal satisfaction for young people in the period of emerging adulthood is the ability to build and maintain dating relationships. However, infidelity has been pointed out as the most frequent cause for the dissolution of dating relationships among young people, causing symptoms similar to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In this study we intend to: (1) investigate the beliefs and attitudes of young adults towards infidelity in dating relationships and (2) understand the influence of family and other systems on these same beliefs and attitudes. For this purpose, a qualitative study based on eight semi-structured interviews with young adults (aged between 18 and 25 years) was conducted. The thematic analysis of the interviews allowed highlighting two main themes that meet the aforementioned objectives: (1) Beliefs and Attitudes towards Infidelity (e.g., unjustifiability, more than something just physical, online infidelity, monotony, communication, loss of self-esteem ) and (2) Contextual Variables that Impact Beliefs and Attitudes towards Infidelity (e.g., family, friends, culture). The present investigation allowed a better understanding of the phenomenon of infidelity in young adults, an age group that is less studied. In this sense, it showed the influence that family has on beliefs and attitudes of young adults towards infidelity, suggesting the importance of carrying out future qualitative studies that cross perspectives of young people with those of their relatives. This research also showed the relevance of promoting psychoeducation about the topic of infidelity towards young people, acting on its prevention.
