Estilos parentais em crianças com epilepsia

Abstract

Background: The concept of “parenting styles”, seen as a set of attitudes of parents related to child rearing, responsible for the emotional context within which occur the interactions between them, is central to the study of parenting. Parenting styles can be influenced not only by the characteristics of the parents, but also by the behavior and characteristics of the children. In children with epilepsy, parenting challenges can be increased. Objectives: to understand which is the predominant parenting style in parents of children with epilepsy, and the similarities/differences when compared to parents of children without known developmental challenges; to understand whether the parenting styles of parents of children with epilepsy vary as a function of clinical variables related with the condition; to compare executive functions of children with epilepsy to those of children without known developmental challenges; to understand the relationship between parenting styles and executive functions. Method: 25 children with epilepsy and their parents participated in the study. Children were aged between 2 and 9 years, and their parents answered a protocol consisting of a sociodemographic questionnaire, and the Portuguese versions of the Parental Dimensions and Styles Questionnaire (QDEP) and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), preschool (BRIEF-P) and school (BRIEF-2) versions. A clinical questionnaire was also completed. The study used two comparison groups, one for the QDEP (n = 23) and one for the BRIEF (n = 75). Results: The QDEP showed low values of internal consistency. In the clinical group, the authoritative parenting style was predominant, and this group was not different from the comparison group in relation to any of the two parenting styles studied. Parents of children without comorbidities reported using the authoritative style more than parents of children with comorbidities. Comparison between groups with regard to executive functions highlighted some statistically significant differences in BRIEF-2 (Working Memory and Planning/Organization) but not BRIEF-P scales. A greater level of difficulties in executive functions was related to a greater use of an authoritarian parenting style. Discussion and conclusions: The present study contributes to a better understanding of the parenting styles of parents of children with epilepsy, and may provide some clues for intervention with these children and families, namely in order to promote the well-being of parents and children as well as more positive relationships between them. On the other hand, it points out ways for investigations to be carried out in the future.
