O presente estudo intitulado “Aleitamento Materno: Factores de Abandono”, visa contribuir para o alargamento de conhecimentos sobre a amamentação, e propõe-se a conceder um contributo tanto para as mães como para os Enfermeiros na área do Aleitamento Materno. Tem como objectivos, conhecer as razões da decisão de amamentar, identificar a fonte de informação e qual ou quais os factor(es) que levam ao abandono do Aleitamento Materno. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo e do tipo descritivo transversal, e para se atingir os objectivos anteriores foi seleccionado como instrumento de colheita de dados o questionário. Este foi aplicado a uma amostra de 30 mulheres com filhos que tivessem até 6 meses de idade, num Centro de Saúde da Região Norte. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, salienta-se que 91,3% das mulheres inquiridas abandonaram precocemente a amamentação exclusiva. Em relação aos factores que mais contribuíram para que abandonassem a amamentação ou que levassem a introduzir outros alimentos, destacou-se o facto das inquiridas pensarem ter pouco leite, consideram o leite fraco e por motivos de trabalho. The present study named “Breastfeeding: Factors for Quitting” aims at contributing for the broadening of the knowledge of breastfeeding, and is supposed to create a contribution to both mothers and the nurses in the area of breastfeeding. The objective is to know the reasons for the decision on breastfeeding, identifying the source of information and which are the factors that lead to quitting Breastfeeding. It is a quantitative and transversal descriptive study, and for the success of the aims above the selected method for gathering data was the questionnaire. This was applied to a sample of 30 women with children up to 6 months of age, in a Healthcare Centre in the North of Portugal. According to the obtained results, it is stressed that 91,3% of the inquired women have early quit exclusive breastfeeding. As to the factors for quitting breastfeeding or for the introduction of other kinds of food, it is stressed the fact that the inquired thought that their milk wasn’t enough, was weak and work causes.
