[EN] A study was made of the chemical composition of natural and agricultural Galician soils with sensibly equal climate (1.600 mm. annual average rainfall, and 14,6ºC. mean of temperature), being the parent material granite and gneiss. The results of pH, carbon and nitrogen are given in this first article. Statistical studies were made and the evolution of agricultural soils with adequate treatments, the variations among hillside profiles and the possible relations between both groups of soils were investigated. It was found that the soils were acid, decreasing the pH with depth in the natural soils; the cultivated ones react normally with adequate treatments to change the acidity. There is correlation between the acidity of the lower horizons of hillside soils and those of cultivated valleys. The regression lines are also given. The natural soils showed a very deep organic horizon of acid moder, which is in relation with the carbon content of cultivated soils although the later descomposition of the organic matter by cultivation makes necessary continuous additions of manure to keep a convenient level of organic matter. Correlation between the carbon and nitrogen content was found, showing an organic origin of the latter. The relation C/N is higher than 10 -mean of agricultural soils- and has a tendency to increase with manure additions. The decreasing of the acidity is in relation with the increasing ration C/N, either of them changing with agricultural practices.
