Abstract

[EN] With the establishment of the Islamic population in the Iberian Peninsula, a different and hitherto unknown form of agriculture was gradually introduced, wherein the main characteristic was the generalised use of water to irrigate cultivations. One of the many consequences of the spread of irrigation within al-Andalus was the birth of a new ecosystem that would differ from the ecosystem of the Mediterranean world of which it formed a part. Within fruit cultivation many, and at times striking (such as the case of citric fruits), species became acclimatised to the gardens of al-Andalus, although the diversification and variety that they afforded, along with species improvement, is of greater interest. This paper, via a number of specific examples, analyses the phenomenon of enrichment of the biodiversity of the agricultural landscape that took place over the course of the eight centuries during which al-Andalus existed within the Iberian Peninsula.
