Abstract

[EN] Twelve maize landraces were selected as representative of the humid and dry zones of Spain and the Canary lslands seeking different latitude and photoperiod regarding the Iberian Peninsula. They were evaluated in five environments in 201 1 and the nutritive value of the maize ears (grain + cob) was assessed by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS). Valid NIRS prediction equations were developed for the determination of crude protein, starch, acid and neutral detergent fiber in maize ears. Landraces were classified according to the nutritious quality. The subtropical environment of Tenerife provided the greater values of crude protein and starch and the lesser levels of fiber concentration likely due to the intensive solar radiation that mainly favored the complete formation of grain in the late varieties.
