E-Dictionaries in Language Learning

E-Dictionaries in Language Learning

Abstract

The implementation of Internet and multimedia devices in teaching methodologies has revolutionised education. The influence of such technological advance spreads over learningrelated fields such as pragmatics, semantics, and by extension lexicography. Although lexicography has undergone a significant development towards major accessibility and multimodal definitions, this progress is not accurately reflected on actual usage of dictionaries within EFL classrooms. The problem may lay in the lack of appealing approaches to dictionaryusage tasks. The purpose of this project is to improve the acquisition of any vocabulary unit by means of a multimodal approach and the implementation of a build-your-dictionary app within a classroom environment. The vocabulary units would be presented to students, by means of different activities in which pictures, definitions, equivalents, phonetic transcriptions, examples and even grammar comments were used dynamically. The build-your-dictionary app would be introduced by giving details of the several functions and games, and used once in class, but encouraging further use at home. Active participation is expected to be highly in class, fostering learning and dictionary task-based work by means of m-learning, but the main objective is to enhance app usage and consultation at home and thanks to that improve students’ final marks. The didactic proposal of this project can ameliorate dictionary-based tasks and dictionary apps usage for EFL teaching/learning, both remaining an essential content in lexicography as well as language learning
