Fraseologismide semantika uurimisvõimalused

Abstract

The main aim of the thesis is to position the analysis of Estonian phraseological subject matter within the research trends in phraseology of recent years. In the theoretical introductory part of the thesis, I endeavour an attempt to disclose the most significant concepts in phraseology by way of relying on new approaches. Primarily, I focus on the motivation-related problems concerning the phraseologisms and highlight the main issues of discussion. To a large extent, phraseologisms tend to be coded – either metaphorically or culturally, in this case the understanding of the figurative units largely depends on the existing competence. Here, the focus is on the question as to how much would knowledge facilitate the understanding of imagery, i.e. does this take place automatically or is it being analysed independently from prior knowledge. Such an understanding is also sustained by psycho-linguistic studies, dealt with in the second theoretical part of the thesis. The articles comprising the main part of the thesis observe the Estonian-language phraseology, using the example of phraseological units within the Database of Estonian Phrases. The analysis focuses on the figurative semantics of phraseologisms, on historical background of material, on understanding of old expressions among young language users, on modifications in Estonian phraseology.

Doktoritöö põhieesmärgiks on eesti fraseoloogilise ainese analüüsi suhestamine viimaste aastate uurimissuundadega fraseoloogiauurimises.
