Abstract

Este es un libro sobre pasiones, fantasías y controversias. Narra de nuevo la extraordinaria, aunque problemática, historia del crecimiento y triunfo del cristianismo en el Imperio romano durante los tres primeros siglos después del nacimiento de Jesús. El cristianismo triunfó, pero sólo después de prolongados enfrentamientos con el estado romano, con religiones enemigas y con disidentes internos. Para reexperimentar los pensamientos, sentimientos, prácticas e imágenes de la vida religiosa del Imperio romano en el que emergió el cristianismo ortodoxo en toda su vibrante diversidad, debemos combinar las antiguas percepciones, a pesar de lo parciales que sean, con las interpretaciones contemporáneas, pese a lo engañosas que resulten. Esta es la tensión y la ilusión de recrear y leer una historia sobre un mundo desaparecido, que estuvo una vez lleno de duras realidades, sueños, demonios y dioses
