Abstract

La traductologie, selon Antoine Berman, produit « une révolution copernicienne » dans le champ du savoir, car la « tâche de la pensée est devenue une tâche de traduction ». En tant que « mise en rapport », la traduction est une des formes du discours que sont l’archéologie de Foucault et la grammatologie de Derrida qui ont produit de puissantes critiques du logocentrisme, mise à l’épreuve d’une déformation linguistique. À travers la formulation d’une critique et une analytique de la traduction, qui vise à établir un rapport dialogique entre langue propre et langue étrangère dans l’horizon traductif, Berman cherche à poser la nécessité interne d’une visée éthique autrement qu’en « impératif catégorique ». Mais son projet d’une éthique du traduire oscille entre la totalité d’une métaphysique et l’à-venir d’une rupture épistémologique. Formulée d’abord comme l’injonction de reconnaître l’Autre en tant qu’Autre, la visée éthique devient par la suite l’obligation de traduire à la lettre au plus près du jeu des signifiants ce qui, en déplaçant l’opposition entre sens et graphème, propose une pédagogie de l’étrangeté dérangeante et rajeunissante. Un système axiologique à deux termes, l’opposition entre la visée éthique et la traduction ethnocentrique, le « bien » et le « mal » traduire, cède la place à un absolu éthique — la nécessité pour la traduction de « vouloir faire oeuvre » tout en restant une « offrande » au texte originel. La « pure visée traduisante » de Berman s’oppose à la notion de l’éthique de la différence et à une politique de la traduction dans la théorie de Meschonnic, Venuti et Spivak.
