Apicultura ecuatoriana: situación y perspectiva

Abstract

La importancia de los polinizadores a nivel mundial radica en su aporte a los procesos de polinización y a la seguridad alimentaria. En la actualidad la gran preocupación por las tasas de extinción es alarmante, en donde cerca del 35 % de los polinizadores invertebrados, principalmente abejas y las mariposas, y alrededor del 17% de los polinizadores vertebrados, como los murciélagos, están muy cerca de desaparecer. Varios factores son los predisponentes para esta acuciante problemática, entre los que tenemos: el calentamiento global, uso de agroquímicos, parásitos como el ácaro Varroa destructor, plagas y enfermedades, etc. En varios países como también en Ecuador se viene implementando estrategias como proyectos y planes de conservación con el objetivo de promover el cuidado de estos insectos, es así que en la Amazonía desde hace algunos años se vienen implementando por parte de las universidades públicas proyectos que incentivan el cuidado y producción sostenible de estos insectos, con lo que se espera dar a conocer a la apicultura y meliponicultura como una actividad económica verde.
