Lietuvos bibliotekininkystė 1918–1940 metais (istoriografija)

Librarianship in Lithuania in 1918-1940
Authors: Biveinis, Petras;

Lietuvos bibliotekininkystė 1918–1940 metais (istoriografija)

Abstract

The history of the librarianship research in the interwar Lithuania has been little investigated. A survey of historiographic works shows that such research involves analysis of the development of the theory of Lithuanian libraries, the notion of the reader, the culture of reading and personal libraries of writers. The article has the purpose to find out key tendencies in the librarianship research and its subject matter and problematics as well as describe its achievements and unresolved issues. The focus is on works published after 1990. The circumstances during the period of restoring the state sovereignty of Lithuania permitted to objectively investigate Lithuanian librarianship as there was no longer any obligation to declare the “class approach” and “party affiliation”. In order to sustain continuity, major works published before 1990 are also taken into consideration. The author applies the principle of problematic and historical presentation in describing the researchers’ contribution to the issues under study (development of the library network and legal regulation of library performance, evolution of ideas regarding libraries, development of school libraries, state public libraries, the Library of the Vytautas Magnum University, personal libraries, etc.) The article states that much has been done in finding out the main trends in library theory and library activities. It also addresses issues that have been insufficiently studied.
