Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Entrepreneurs are catalysts for innovation, job creation and economic wealth. Their success is dependent on several factors, not least of which is health. The focus of this entry is on the occupational health of entrepreneurs. Despite the financial, reputational, and health risks involved, out of necessity or desire, entrepreneurs make a conscious decision to start a new venture. The unique nature of the entrepreneurial role, one with high autonomy and high demands, creates specific opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs to achieve good health. Drawing on the extant literature, this entry has three key objectives. The first is to highlight how the unique environmental, role and person variables of entrepreneurs influences their health. The second is to identify the key physical and psychological health outcomes that are of salience to entrepreneurs. Thirdly, the entry offers practical strategies that can be put in place by entrepreneurs and policy makers to improve the health outcomes of entrepreneurs.
