THE VALUE OF ANNUAL SOIL TESTING ON LUVISOLIC SOILS

Abstract

For Luvisolic soils of west central Alberta, repeated annual testing of soils for available N and P appears to be very worthwhile. The test for N appears to be essential for cereal crops following a grass–legume hay mixture in a crop rotation. Tests for available K in the Breton Plot soils demonstrate high levels of this nutrient, and repeated annual testing is a waste of time and effort. The same is true of the EC value which shows these soils, as expected, to be almost free of soluble salts. The pH values show the Breton Plot soils to be neutral enough for most crops, but for specific crops where pH is very critical, some repeated testing is called for because of the year-to-year variation in values of pH obtained. Annual testing would also be necessary to check on acidifying effects of repeated large fertilizer applications.
