Nanterre-Tupinamba : les affinités d’Hélène Clastres

Abstract

Récemment disparue, Hélène Clastres (1936-2023) restera dans l’histoire de la discipline pour ses contributions à l’ethnologie, l’ethnohistoire et l’histoire de la pensée anthropologique. Originellement paru en 1972, celui de ses textes que nous avons retenu pour ce FloriLESC — « Les beaux-frères ennemis : à propos du cannibalisme tupinamba » — a été célébré comme un classique des études américanistes. Rééditée et mise en ligne à plusieurs reprises1, cette publication a été rédigée alors que notre collègue était membre du Lesc, où elle a passé la première dizaine d’années de sa carrière, entre 1967 et 1977.Notre texte s’articule en deux parties. La première présente la carrière d’Hélène Clastres, notamment lors des années cruciales qu’elle a passées à Nanterre et sur lesquelles s’attardent assez peu les rares sources retraçant son parcours académique (Ruiz Zubizarreta et Jabin, 2023 ; Jabin et Ruiz Zubizarreta, 2025). Vient ensuite, dans un second temps, l’analyse de la genèse, du contenu et de l’impact de son article princeps, consacré au traitement de l’affinité dans le cadre de l’anthropophagie rituelle des Amérindiens de la côte atlantique au XVIe siècle. En annexe, vient une liste exhaustive des publications d’Hélène Clastres, suivie d’un inventaire des principales exégèses de son œuvre.
