Many contemporary roma artists’ works share the particularity of using both drawing and writing, in different ways. In this article, we examine the paintings, poems or hybrid productions of Sandra Jayat (France), Karoly Bari (Hungary), and Ceija Stojka (Austria), with an overview to younger artists’ productions presented in the « First Roma Pavilion » at the Biennale of Venice-2007.The close link between scriptural and pictural modes in their works seems to be the sign of a specific relationship to the meaning and its expression, to the space and the identity. This relationship may be related to roma cultural identity today, and to the evolution of the ways of expressing it. Rather than sociological explanations or references to the history of art, we present how these artists, by deliberately ignoring traditional separation of genres, connect creation and interpretation of signs (letters as well as pictures), deconstruct « images » (as stereotypes) to free the imagination.By mixing visual (synthetic) and verbal (analytic) languages, they invent strategies of originally poetical expressions of the self. As so, this detour by graphical works reflecting the limits and possibilities of expression through different languages may help us understand the actual development of roma literature.
