The social professions as a whole are a moving target, subject over time to divisions, internal tensions and numerous changes and reforms. While these professions are characterized by a multiplicity of theoretical currents, practices in various locations with heterogeneous publics, and a variety of administrative affiliations, they are also characterized by a remarkable capacity for adaptation and even genius. And what if, in the midst of all this evolution, social criticism had been the very cement of the social professions?
