In the course of a demonstration free-recall learning (FRL) experiment, it was noted that Ss differed markedly in the extent to which they grouped initially recalled words together in subsequent recall periods. Further examination indicated that the degree of such grouping was inversely related to both rate and asymptote of learning. These results were interpreted as the consequence of persisting in the use of an inappropriate encoding and retrieval scheme.
