Abstract

Si Morand rejette vivement un modèle pseudo-humaniste sclérosé, qui réduit le monde antique à un objet mort, réservé au seul lettré, il n’hésite pas lui-même à emprunter la matière de facéties et d’allusions presque toujours brèves, parfois brillantes et érudites, à l’Antiquité. Il trace une limite culturelle assez nette entre le monde des Anciens et le nôtre, mais établit aussi des rapprochements ponctuels, entre l’empire romain et la puissance américaine par exemple. Dans ses œuvres de fiction, il adopte trois traitements bien distincts : Fils du soleil transpose un mythe ancien dans le monde moderne et son esthétique, avec une confrontation sous-jacente des deux univers ; La Matrone d’Éphèse réduit au maximum l’ancrage antique au point de n’en faire qu’un élément pittoresque au service d’une démonstration à portée universelle ; Un amateur de supplices, en revanche, se caractérise par un certain effort de reconstitution, qui n’interdit pas la formulation d’hypothèses psychologiques inédites relatives au personnage de Néron.
