Un abaque à Delphes

Abstract

Ένας άβακας στους Δελφούς Πάνω σε ένα λίθο, γνωστό εδώ και πολύ καιρό λόγω μιας επιγραφής (FD III, 4, 189) και τοποθετημένο στο νότιο άνδηρο, στη ΝΑ γωνία του ναού του Απόλλωνα, βλέπουμε δύο σειρές γραμμών και δύο ημικύκλια που εφάπτονται σε δύο από τις γραμμές και τα οποία, από όσο γνωρίζουμε, δεν είχαν επισημανθεί μέχρι σήμερα. Πρόκειται για έναν άβακα. Αφού παρουσιάσουμε εν συντομία με ποιόν τρόπο οι Έλληνες χρησιμοποιούσαν το όργανο αυτό, περιγράφουμε το λίθο και εκθέτουμε τους λόγους που μας οδηγούν σε αυτήν την ταύτιση, προτού υπενθυμίσουμε τα ζητήματα που θέτει ο συγκεκριμένος άβακας αλλά και γενικά οι ελληνικοί άβακες.
