Abstract

Le tell de Kouphovouno, au sommet d'une colline très surbaissée, est le seul site néolithique connu dans le bassin de Sparte. Au cours de la mission, notre objectif était de comprendre le fonctionnement hydrologique du bassin de Sparte et d'identifier les ressources en eau disponibles pour le site. Les contextes géomorphologique et tectonique ainsi que la répartition des alluvions quaternaires s'avèrent déterminants pour expliquer la localisation de ces ressources. D'après les données hydrogéologiques, seules les alluvions quaternaires abritent une nappe pérenne puissante, alimentée par les pluies sur les montagnes bordant le bassin de Sparte et drainée par l'Eurotas. Le site de Kouphovouno, à l'abri des crues brutales de piémont, proche d'une source pérenne et d'un petit cours d'eau, le Parori, abrite un sous-écoulement saisonnier permettant un accès à l'eau qui était d'autant plus facile durant la période d'occupation du site - calée sur l'optimum Holocène - que les conditions climatiques étaient probablement plus humides.
