Abstract

Comment parler aujourd'hui des cadastres antiques ? A partir de quelles données peut-on se les représenter ? Et dans quelle mesure est-il possible de restituer avec quelque crédibilité ces réseaux que les traités d'arpenteurs et autres « mesureurs de champs » plantent dans les paysages agraires comme cadre théorique et pratique d'occupation du sol ?A s'en tenir à la matérialité de l'objet comme évidence d'une réalité historique incontestable, nous ne disposons que de deux ensembles de plans cadastraux — à Rome et à Orange — qui livrent une représentation conventionnelle et sélective de la planimétrie antique et ne constituent donc pas un atlas du parcellaire.Or, depuis quelques décennies, ont surgi en abondance carroyages et réseaux géométriques qui dessinent et matérialisent les formes d'une maîtrise des paysages dans le cadre plus large des pratiques de colonisation et d'implantation impérialistes. C'est vrai aussi bien des quelques ensembles « grecs » d'Italie du Sud ou de Gaule méridionale que des centaines de réseaux plus ou moins vastes de l'Occident romain.
