Abstract

In seinem Schlüsseltext »Das Medium der Kunst« führt Niklas Luhmann eigene Termini für eine Theorie der Kunst ein. Zentral ist dabei seine Unterscheidung von ›Medium‹ und ›Form‹ – Termini, die Luhmann als Variablen verwendet. Gerade in Bezug auf Musik lässt sich diese Abstraktion aufschlussreich konkretisieren. Vom Ton als ›Formung‹ des Mediums Luft über die Tonleiterstruktur als Medium der Themenformen bis zur Fuge als Medium der Kunst der Fuge ließen sich am Beispiel des Bachschen Opus theoretisch unendlich viele analytische Differenzierungen anbringen. Luhmann selbst gelangt mit seinem Vokabular bis zur selbstreferentiellen Formel: Die »Differenz von Medium und Form wird selbst medial«. Da es in dieser Theorie um die Darstellung von Möglichkeiten geht, aus denen selektiert wird, liegt, auf die Musiktheorie bezogen, eine Besprechung der Satzmodelle besonders nahe. Die Verortung der Modelle, ihre Möglichkeiten und Grenzen können anhand Luhmanns Medium-Form-Unterscheidung besprochen werden.
