The education of ethnic minorities from the home-school continuity-discontinuity framework
Authors: Poveda, David;

Abstract

This article presents a discussion of the proposal known as home-school continuity-discontinuity framework or home-school mismatch framework, designed to explain and to intervene on the educational experience of ethnic minority pupils. In the first section a historical development of the framework in North America is presented in relation to the deprivation perspectives of the 1960's. In this discussion the possible linkages with European sociological thought are pointed out and the contributions that could be made to Spanish educational research are also discussed. In the following sections the tenets that sustain the framework are presented and some empirical studies that support it are reviewed, especially those that have incorporated instructional changes designed to increase the cultural congruence of educational processes. Finally, the main criticisms of the frame are discussed, and some future lines of development are proposed
