The valley of Parsęta, one of the most important settlement areas in Western Pomerania, was subjected to a detailed archaeological analysis to determine whether certain cultural elements point to continuities in this area. In the period from the turn of the 2nd and 3rd centuries to the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries, five successive stages of settlement reorganization were identified, namely: 1) initiation and stabilization of the settlement system of the Dębczyński group; 2) beginning of destabilization of the settlement system of the Dębczyński group; 3) decline of the settlement system of the Dębczyński group; 4) the earliest stage of the formation of Early Medieval settlements with ‘Dziedzice’ type ceramics; 5) establishment of a fortification in Białogard. These settlement transformations were assigned three successive stages of transformations related to a) the Dębczyński group (the turn of Eggers’ phases C1a and C1b to phase E); b) elements of Scandinavian tradition (phase E); c) the earliest stage of Early Medieval cultural development (6th/7th–8th century).
