A series of assessment experiences are described in which community support persons (teachers, mental health workers, etc.) andfamilies in which a child has been identified as emotionally disturbed and enrolled in a residential reeducation center (Cumberland House School), are brought togetherfor a four to five hour period. During this time participants engage in structured activities which enable family members and community agents to build trust and gain insights into the strengths and stresses which face the family. Plans are then coordinated jointly among community agents and family members in developing strategies for coping with problem areas.
