The use of natural enemies to suppress agoricultural pests is called biological control. Its practical value was first demonstrated in California in 1889 in a very spectacular fashion. The citrus industry was then threatened with ruin from the ravages of the destructive cottony cushion scale. This insect was killing the trees and forcing the growers to abandon citrus as a commercial enterprise, but in the short period of one year the insect was completely controlled by a predaceous ladybird beetle imported from Australia.
