Newsreels demand carefully planned teaching strategies that will lead to optimal learning experiences. It is best to begin with the smallest possible units. At first, only one newsreel episode of one to three minutes duration should be shown at any one time. It is necessary that the teacher critically select appropriate episodes because not all are suitable for language instruction. Since an unprepared student may find the action and the commentary of a newsreel too fast or too difficult for his comprehension, most episodes have to be introduced by the teacher.
