Over the years I have sought to make sense of the many forms of art teaching practiced in this country. This first was my subject in Art Education and Back to Basics.l Most recently I undertook a larger analysis, Art Making and Education.2 In this essay I will trace links I find between Rudolf Amheim's teaching and writing and my interpretation of the traditions of art teaching. To understand the influence of Arnheim's ideas, I need to include an account of my own history.
