Abstract

The Interuniversity Centre for European Studies in Montreal is a scholarly organization that deserves more attention from American historians. The Centre is a bilingual interdisciplinary research institution which promotes interaction between scholars in all the social sciences and humanities. It also encourages research by both individuals and groups. The ICES was founded in 1971 by Concordia University and the Universite du Quebec 'a Montreal. They were joined in 1975 by McGill University, which became an associate member. In addition to operating grants from these three universities, the Centre today is financed by outside grants and by membership dues. The organization is governed by a board consisting of representatives of the three above-named universities, and its officers also come from these three institituions. The honorary president of the ICES is George Rude of Concordia University. The current director is Alex Macleod of the Political Science Department at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal. The Centre is housed in a comfortable suite of offices (including a conference room and a small library) on Phillips Square in the heart of the city. Although most of its members reside in the Montreal area, the ICES is now actively seeking new members from across Canada as well as in the United States and Europe. Membership is open both to institutions and to individuals. The price for individuals is $15.00 per year,1 whereas the price for institutions can vary. An entire university
