Three new varieties are recognized in Passiflora cumbalensis (Karsten) Harms, an edible- fruited member of Passiflora subgenus Tacsonia section Bracteogama found in the Andes of South America. New combinations and change in status make a total of seven varieties recognized in this species. During the course of field work for a revi- sionary study of Passiflora subgenus Tacsonia (Juss.) Triana & Planchon (Escobar 1980), three new varieties of P. cumbalensis (Karsten) Harms were discovered. Closer study of the group re- vealed that three species, recognized earlier by Killip (1938), are more realistically assigned varietal status under P. cumbalensis. Within the subgenus Tacsonia, Passiflora cum- balensis is one of the more wide-spread species, forming fairly large populations. It tends to be confined to the moist higher slopes of the An- dean cordilleras and volcanos, forming natural hybrids with P. mixta L. f., where the two species come into contact (Killip 1938 and pers. obs.). It may also form hybrids with other, more local- ized species of subgenus Tacsonia (Escobar 1980). The plants are large-flowered, tendril-bearing lianas, variously known as "curuba" or "curuba bogotana" in Colombia, "taxo" or "tauso" in north and central Ecuador, "gulian" in southern Eucador, and "puru puru" in Peru. The varieties
