Abstract

The purpose of this article is to contribute to the writing of a history of the so-called "Black theater" in Brazil. Its main goal is to demonstrate that the Companhia Negra de Revistas , in the 1920s, and the Teatro Experimental do Negro , in the 1940s and 1950s dealt with race issues but their productions were not without significant dilemmas and ambiguities.
